If you pump the pond often you could get a plastic milk crate and wrap it with hardware cloth. Set your pump in that and have about 10 sq ft of strainer before the water gets to the intake.

I haven't had frog legs in a long time. I used to hunt them. Remember the legs used to twitch when I cooked them.
