What people don't realize is how "American" South Africa was. (Now it's becoming "African", whatever that means) The whole culture here between, say, 1930 to 1990 was largely American: the architecture, social values, business ethos, books, music, in fact, nearly everything. From a personal point of view, most of the significant influences in my own life have been American. Although, professionally, I was in the medical field, if I had been able to have my own way, I would have been a jazz drummer --- still my first love. That's why I am so comfortable conversing with Americans -- I have the greatest fondness and respect for them and possibly even an understanding. And that's also why I am so upset about what is going on now.
