Yes, I'm born and bred there. I now live in Johannesburg.

What people don't realize is how "American" South Africa was. (Now it's becoming "African", whatever that means) The whole culture here between, say, 1930 to 1990 was largely American: the architecture, social values, business ethos, books, music, in fact, nearly everything. From a personal point of view, most of the significant influences in my own life have been American. Although, professionally, I was in the medical field, if I had been able to have my own way, I would have been a jazz drummer --- still my first love. That's why I am so comfortable conversing with Americans -- I have the greatest fondness and respect for them and possibly even an understanding.

And that's also why I am so upset about what is going on now.
