About the JSONLINE stuff before the middle of the page. They make the point that China is catching up with the US in the number of engineers. That has to be true. I think it will take time until the Chinese engineers surpass the US engineers in quality because (so I hear) China doesn't yet have the money to provide expensive equipment in the style of Tsinghua to every engineering school. Engineering is hands on stuff. Also their comparison of Tsinghua with Milwaukee is misleading. If one compared Tsinghua with MIT the comparison would not be overwhelming on either side, so I think. Anyway, the Chinese passion for education will surely begin to appear in the engineering results and the technical sophistication of imports from China.
So why will the US fall behind China in engineering prowess?
Laziness of wealth? Obsession with fighting wars? Genes? The advantage of choosing the best out of 1.3 billion rather than the best out of 300 million? Maybe a little of all of these.
It will be a frosty Friday before I invest in tech stocks, including tech stocks of China. Buffett said don't invest in something that you don't understand and Jay Chen said that technology is the most red hot and therefore the most competitive and therefore the most dangerous area of investment, or words to that effect. When in doubt listen to the masters.
Though one doesn't invest in technology, the export of high tech goods will help China's service industries too.
