I think that was the right thing, frankly. The adherence to the dynastic principal in these cultures (Pakistani, with Bhutto, and the lady in Sri Lanka), such that essentially misogynistic cultures will elect women if they are the next in line after a powerful spouse or father, was getting a bit old. Besides, it is reasonable to be sensitive to the desire to be ruled by native leaders, rather than a European spouse, in a continuing post- Imperial environment.
