I wouldn't write the epitaph for the Iraq situation just yet. It's clear that the majority of Iraqis want a normal life, not a sign-in to pan-Arab craziness (the kind of craziness which they know always just loved Saddam). The US will have an invite from the Kurds for as long as we want one, the Shi'ites are trying to work with the US for the most part. The dismal part is that no Iraqi govenment as such has yet formed. If we can get one, things may look up.
