Someone posted here on SI that a company in Boston could not afford to pay prevalent salary for an experienced software engineer they needed, so planned to contract out to India. But before it did that, it put an ad in local newspaper, saying they could only pay the salary at the Indian prevalent level ($40,000 or so), and a dozen or so applied, so the company recruited one in Boston with the pay substantially lower than the US standard. Maybe this is the way to go in the US<g>
