There are some good articles in today's WSJ about the option of creating a autonomous Kurdish state. Even the Turks are saying it might not be all bad.

From a strategic perspective, it might work for us as well. Using very few of our military and economic resources, the Kurds could probably put together a viable and stable state. And it would shrink (at least geographically) our mess in Iraq, and maybe we could pull out some troops. Maybe an all Arab Iraq would be a more manageable situation for a UN force.

There are two problems with that idea. The big one is that there are major oil fields and oil reserves in Kurdish territory.........making it difficult to convince the Sunnis and Shiites to let go of the Kurds.

Secondly, there are major Kurd populations in Iran and Turkey.......I think the total Kurd population is around 22 million. I don't think there is enough room for all of them in Kurdish Iraq. That would mean that Turkey and Iran would have to give some of their land to make an independent Kurdistan work. I don't think they are ready to do that.

However, I can understand the Turks willingness to talk about it........the Turkish Kurds have been a major thorn in their side for nearly 20 years. During that time, the Turks have killed nearly as many Kurds as Saddam did.

How you get to there from here I don't know. But it might be a small step in the right direction.

You look at Iraq, you have to wonder where this will end. I don't hear anyone making predictions. I don't hear anyone offering solutions. It's really a freaking mess.

I agree. Its spun completely out of control. The worst part is the WH doesn't know what to do either. They opened up a mess and they don't know how to put the lid back on.

BTW have you noticed that different members of the administration say one thing in public and Bush says something else.....particularly Powell? Its like a runaway train. That thing with Powell and his assistant on Sunday really blew me away. She tried to get him to stop talking by pushing the camera away. Bizarre.
