Seems like a Darwin award moment

Yep sure does, after it happened in Afghanistan also. U.S.A positive public relations in Iraq is now extinct.

They were shooting guns into the air, not a smart move in a war zone with helicopters flying around. Pilots thought they were being shot at. Seems like a Darwin award moment.

This is like a mother whose son has been accused of raping a 17 yr old who says: "She looked 18 and she was wearing a short skirt. What did she think was going to happen?"

And the same answer is deserved; "Don't be an ass, he should have held off, thought it through and acted morally and intelligently."

But one thing is certain, with all those gunners up there looking for targets and worried about getting killed, these things will continue to happen and the insurgents will continue to garner popular support. In addition in a select few instances, this will result in the birth of a 1 in 10,000 of terrorists that is smart, dedicated and deadly, and aimed right at our hearts. If it was my family that had been killed in that wedding party, I'd be that guy, how about you?

In Afghanistan the architect of the plan to transform the Afghanis into a force capable of stopping the Russians had to allow a certain amount of ammunition (and it was substantial) for "joy" shots. It doesn't strike us as being particularly smart but it is traditional in these areas. Still as a pilot how do you tell the difference.
