Apparently, it was a terrorist compound, according to the Pentagon. Large weapons stash recovered.

Now who are you going to believe, the wild savages or the patriots defending our country?

Another version - People were shooting to celebrate a wedding.

Military investigating report US helicopter fired on Iraq wedding party, killing 40+

(Baghdad, Iraq-AP) May 19, 2004 - Iraqi officials say a US helicopter opened fire on a wedding party in western Iraq, killing more than 40 people. The US military says it cannot confirm the report but is investigating.

Associated Press Television News obtained videotape showing a truck containing bodies of those allegedly killed. About a dozen bodies could be clearly seen. The videotape also showed mourners digging graves and featured an interview with a man who described the attack.

The deputy police chief in Ramadi says the attack occurred in the middle of the night in a remote desert area near the border with Syria and Jordan. He says people at the wedding fired weapons in the air in a traditional form of celebration and that American troops came to investigate and left.

But, helicopters later returned to the area, the official said, and started firing. He says women and children were among those killed.

In July 2002 Afghan officials said 48 civilians at a wedding party were killed by a US airstrike. The US Central Command later said the airstrike was justified because American planes had come under fire.
