That is actually not completely true. From what I recall Liberty was ordered to leave the area (as per official US version) because of the impending war.

It is a real tragedy that thirty four young American sailors died then but it is border line ridiculous to think that Israel would intentionally attack American ship knowing that:
1) US is biggest Israel's Ally
2) there were American ships including two Carriers in the area

It may be true that Liberty position was considered as a secret but US knew very well that Israel would attack any military ship of unknown origin.
