The idea originally was developed under a military contract involving SanDisk and Kaneb Services. The idea was to create an extremely rugged flash card that would be worn like dog tags by soldiers on combat assignments. If the soldier were hospitalized, the necessary medical records would be right there when they were needed.

This project may have fulfilled the requirements of the contract, but I don't see anything that would suggest the military decided to use the technology. Anyhow, it probably gives SanDisk some experience in designing a storage device that would be secure against unauthorized access to the health information it contains.
