I think that's where you are wrong...........what the voters think is the ultimate test in a democracy.

Democracy means we choose the government. It doesn't mean reality is whatever people vote to declare that it is.

I don't know what you mean by that last statement.

I'll rephrase.

Currently their is a controversy about Bush's actions leading up to the current war. Some people say that Bush lied, and not just one or two mild lies, but a series of very deliberate major lies, that he used to get public support behind this war. Others say that this accusation is false. Still others do not claim to know the answer.

We live in a We are in a democratic republic, or to simplify "a democracy". An since we live in a democracy the people will get to choose who will be president for the next 4 years after the current presidential term ends. One of the criteria for that choice will be their opinion about Bush's honesty, and their general impression of Bush's character and actions, or more specifically the question "Did Bush lie about Iraq?". If a majority think he did then he probably won't be re-elected. Assuming for the sake of argument that a majority do think Bush lied and that because of this he loses the election, that will not actually prove that he lied. In that sense what the voters think is not the "ultimate test". What the voters think doesn't determine the truth of their opinion. They are not right just because they are in the majority. It will only determine who gets to be the next president.

"The most mild versions where something like "If we can't stop communism in Vietnam then the countries around Vietnam may also fall to communism." "

Then the mild version was too strong.......pretty lame theory in my opinion.

The mild version turned out to be true.
