Saddam was never a hero of the right (just as Khomeini, with his Revolutionary Guards, wasn't a hero to the left). Saddam may have been a hero to Soviet, Chinese, and French arms dealers, but that isn't necessarily, the right.

do you remember the stark incident? at the height of the iraq/iran war, the u.s.s. stark was bombed by the iraqis... the state dept. just winked and nudged and said to saddam... 'no problem'
