Brian, buying is not usually the problem, it is knowing
when to sell so that you don't wind up in a long term
losing position..... I speak from painful experience.
Hopefully, I've learned my lesson. Buying in Jan 2000
was a great move, but selling in March 2000 was a greater
move.... The direction of the tide turned, I didn't!
My fund positions were killed....

It doesn't have to contrast...

Contrarian investors (successful ones anyway) seldom purchase in opposition to a move...

When the market has moved down and stabilized and everyone is shouting "doom and gloom"...buy...

When the market has moved up fairly rapidly and stalls and everyone is shouting "this time it's different"...sell...

Not while it's falling or rising...
