You are correct. It is almost impossible to get fired unless you have overtly abused or molested a child. It isn't clear from the article but it looks like the program was eliminated, in which case the teacher would "not be renewed" on contract. 'Poetic' license allows the author of the article to call it 'fired'. In this case the Principal may have done some stuff that was outside of due process and that puts the whole matter into the personal/ethics/legal/political arena. If the Principal had just eliminated the program for lack of (funding, interest, curricular justification etc), there would probably be nothing the teacher could do. But, the evidence presented in the article seems to show there was more to it. And, powerful organizations have picked it up as a banner case. The NEA does not take every case teachers bring to it, just the one's that can impact their national agenda. And, they look closely to make sure the case is win-able before taking it on. It looks to me like the Principal stepped over the line. My advice to the Principal: step down gracefully, move on, make some dignified speeches about your principles and values...become a martyred spokesperson for right wing issues in education. You will be a hero to the cause. Of course, that was my advice to Bill Clinton when he got caught lying. Did he listen....nooooowa, now his legacy is to always be remembered as a disgraced and humiliated boob.
