Interesting comments Maurice. Especially when one considers these remarks Senator Kerry made.

"Yes, I committed the same kind of atrocities as thousands of other soldiers have committed, in that, I took part in shootings and free fire zones, I took part in search and destroy missions, in the burning of villages. All of these are contrary to the laws of warfare".
John F. Kerry

A thoughtful response. You are right to point out that it played against the background of their own hardships, but the treatment of German prisoners was not generally bad, this was a glaring exception related to the sheer evil encountered in the camp. I do think that there is such as thing as uncontrollable emotional pressure, though it is rare. But even if there were a small possibility of containing themselves, through sheer force of will, surely the emotional pressure is mitigating, at least. I suppose the main thing is this: do we, on balance, think that what they did was so terrible that we would want to make a point of prosecuting it? Or do we think that there is a rough justice served, and that the men involved had probably suffered enough since the invasion?
