Rock > What is your opinion of the ending of apartide, being a South African?

Briefly, things are a lot better for middle-class blacks and a lot worse for working-class whites. There are still enormous problems eg lack of education, unemployment and poverty, AIDS, affirmative action against whites and crime possibly being the most important. Many whites have left and many blacks have come from all over Africa, so, today, SA is very African, less Western, and becoming increasingly so. Maybe that's why I spend most of my time on the internet! I get upset every day with what I see happening around but my kids, who all live and work here, are prepared to make a go of it. They say there's nowhere to run to so they may as well stay and try to be happy. Maybe they are right? Meanwhile, for those who have it, life here is still good. Standard of living for middle-class people is probably as good as anywhere.

Apartheid, nice while it lasted for some, was a recipe for sure disaster --- 4 million people can't keep 40 million in subjugation forever.

Rock > as bad as Isreal currenly is behaving, they aren't nearly as bad as some of the thugs we've supported

Sure. But Israel is supposed to know better. The history of the Jewish people is replete with persecution and oppression, including the Holocaust, so one would think they would have compassion towards others and certainly not shoot children in the back. By no stretch of the imagination can such acts be called "self-defence" which is the favorite term used for wiping out Palestinian women, kids and their homes etc.

Furthermore, the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is not just confined to the MidEast but has now set the whole region alight, was responsible for 9-11, and could even start WW3. Thus, it is in everyone's interest, not least the Israelis and Palestinians, that the conflict is settled as soon as possible and not allowed to escalate, which it has. For this I hold the US responsible because, instead of acting as an "honest broker" and arbitrating fairly, it has come down on Israel's side and thus has enabled Israeli/Likud fanatics to do as they please.

Re: In fact, as bad as Isreal currenly is behaving, they aren't nearly as bad as some of the thugs we've supported, look up our involvement with the brutal regime of the Shah of Iran or some of the facist regimes that we installed and supported for years in Latin America. It really is a sad history that most Americans are totally unaware of.

Well, I think we cannot downplay Israel as just another banana republic alongside Chile, Nicaragua, and Palhavi Iran... Keep in mind that the latter were all client-states whose friendly ties to the US stemmed from realpolitik --and US opinion was well aware of that. Televangelists Falwell, Graham and Robertson never whipped up their audiences into a fanatical support for Pinochet's Chile! Of course, they were supportive of the Chilean regime inasmuch as it was a conservative, Christian and anti-Communist ally... But American Judeo-Protestants were never urged to donate millions of dollars to Chile --and hasten the Second Coming in the process! American Jesus freaks didn't build up a kitty to erect a Second Temple in Santiago... So, my point is that Israel is not just another transient in US foreign policy that can find itself on the wrong side of the fence by the mere whim of the President --because that would put half of America on the wrong side as well!!
