re: Why does a contractor have to have a crew cab or SUV? What's wrong with a corolla with a trailer hitch? Not macho enough? The other contractors will make fun? A corolla with a small trailer would be just as secure for expensive tools as the cab of a SUV, and you can carry just as many bricks or kettles tar.

Do you have a clue what weight is. Have you ever tried to tow a load of lumber or bricks or rocks over a 5k ft. summit with a freaking corolla when it's 100`F out side.
What an idiot!

Why does a contractor have to have a crew cab or SUV? What's wrong with a corolla with a trailer hitch? Not macho enough? The other contractors will make fun? A corolla with a small trailer would be just as secure for expensive tools as the cab of a SUV, and you can carry just as many bricks or kettles tar (why do expensive tools deserve to be stored in the cab of a SUV and not children?).

1) trailers are limited to the slow lanes on the freeway with all the semis and old people and people not paying attention. You are 10x more likely to get into a wreck in the slow lanes.

2) A generator or space heater will not fit into the trunk of a corolla, much less a table saw or radial arm saw. If you think you could put one of those on a trailer... I would love to see you try it. Plus they are not secure in a trailer.

3) You are incorrect that you can carry the same amount of materials and probably don't have much experience towing trailers. Heavy loads will cause a lighter towing vehicle to fish tail and possibly jacknife. Especially since you are forced to drive in the slow lane with ignorant white collar jackasses who are tail gating and not paying attention.

4) I used to hook up a trailer to my 3/4 ton to get materials. I'd be able to get about 3000 lbs of materials on a Saturday that way. No way you can do that in a passenger car.

DaveM, you've never lifted a hammer have you? You might try it. Paper pushers do not build this world. It would be good for you. You'd find out that contractors are the salt of the earth. Most are way honest good hard working people. Paper pushers just have no idea who makes their world.

SUVs are not only less stable, you are much more likely to be killed or injured in one due to the fact that they flip over so easily.

Drive them if you must but don't claim to be a patriot. And please pull over to use the phone, my life is important too. And use the damn turn signals, they are there for a purpose.
