Abduragak Abubakar Janjalani, the former leader of the group, like Osama bin Ladin, was a veteran of the war in Afghanistan. Not true, actually. He trained in Peshawar and Khost in the early '90s, and did a spell of "religious education" in Libya and a bit of "Islamic jurisprudence" in Saudia Arabia before that (disputed by some sources), but he did not fight against the Russians in Afghanistan, though much of his mystique was built on that allegation. sr@knowswaytoomuchaboutit.com
