Wife broke the lower half of her knee off.

OMG! Pleeeese! eeeeeeeeeeeek!

Then one day she said screw this stuff and never took another pill. Depends on the person.

That is so interesting. Did she not throw up and have diarrhea and lose 22 pounds and get so weak she could barely walk?

I lived on saltines and gingerale, or what of it I could keep down, and my husband would try to get me to eat scrambled eggs, and then one night after all that was left of me was skin and bones, I suddenly got a wild craving for bacon. N went to the all night supermarket and bought bacon and tomatoes and Hellman's mayo and I wolfed down the best damn BLT you could ever have, and it was over, except for the building up my strength part.

My mother (also bluered's mother, of course) smoked two packs a day for decades, and one day decided to stop, and just did, and said it wasn't hard. That's very unusual. Cigarettes are supposed to be harder to stop than heroin. I think you're right, it depends on the person. I wonder why one person has physical withdrawal symptoms and another doesn't. There is a reason, even if we don't know it.
