Oh, I didn't realize you'd already read them.

I don't know if you picked up on the gold-silver exchange rate sub-plot. For example, the scene in Daniel's family's basement, where they are bringing in boxes of freshly minted silver coins and melting them down into ingots. It's a very concrete example of arbitrage. There is a branch of the family that buys gold and another branch that swaps it for silver. Easy way to get rich if you're hard working. Only a 5-6% increase so you have to keep at it, but it's almost free money.

My recollection of history is that Newton made it worse, but I am looking forward to Stevenson's insights on that.
