lorne, Your post is totally on topic. The people most threatened by Islamic fundamentalists - or perhaps those who claim to be such as they truly in conflict with the tennants of Islam - are not we in the west - it is the basic populations of the Arab world. I have associates in Egypt that I can chat freely with. They are Islamic, professional and rational - and extremly cautious in what they say. Perhaps the most disturbing thing is that they truly believe the jews control the US. But they will admit that Osama et al are a threat not just to us but to them.

An interesting point to try to make to them is that if Arafat was like Mandela the world public opinion would be far more supportive of their cause. They simply do not understand the negative effect that the use of terror has on their situation.

The bottom line on the situation is that the Arab world has a serious problem. It is not the US or Israel - it is internal - and I think they know it! To the extent the rationale elements of their society come to realize they will have support from the west (ie Bush) the more hope we can have that they will prevail. Iran is the key. When/if the mullahs fall - the world will change!
