Yo dumbass. Knowing when an order is lawful or not is very simple. Would they have been a lawful orders if the detainees were really terrorists, and you were really saving lives by treating them in this hideous fashion? It wouldn't matter if you were holding 3 gang bangers that had just raped Mother Theresa it wouldn't be a lawful order. Of course you know that. You don't know since you were never military that you spend a fair amount of time dealing with this issue in training. Hell I'm medically retired for going on 20 years now and I remember. Doesn't fit with your view though so I suppose we should discard.
