I don't think ethics are easy.
It's much more dangerous to think the ethics come from outside somewhere, and by a process of forgiveness have loopholes. When you realize that ethics and morals are all that stands between you and chaos it makes you hold them more dearly.

To be clear, In the context I was referring to, someone is not excluded from a social circle just because they are shunned or despised. I was using "social" to mean those we are aquainted with, even if by reputation only, not just our friends. Even our enemies are part of our social circle because they affect our lives. Those outside the circle are those we don't think about one way or the other.
