An acceptable definition of rich is having a liquid net worth of $10,000,000 or earnings of $700,000 per year for the last 5 years with a net worth of over $7,000,000. Take the $200,000 and follow the tax tables, minus expenses, and in no way does $200,000 suggest rich. It is not much money today. The tax advocates are being disingeuous with the term rich because it polarizes the majority into sticking it to another group besides themselves...but to suggest that $200,000 is rich and then to compare it to the truly wealthy, it is neither right nor fair. It is no different than selling tax increases by calling them roll backs. Washington is very good at spins...they do it for a reason.

The rightwing fight for the rich to pay low taxes while the rest of us bear the real burden. Their favorite tact is to pick the lowest cut-off point like $200,001 and say "that's not rich". But first of all most of the rich make much more than $200,000, and secondly $200,000 is rich depending on where you live and if you have a family to support. A bachelor in Iowa making $200,000 is definitely rich. The family man in New York City is not. That's why we have child tax credits, to even things out a bit. But the cut-off has to come somewhere and I'd advise the guy making $201,000 to lower his salary $1001. gg
