So we should hold ourselves up for comparison to some of the most repressive societies on earth?

No, but we should continue to use English words in their normal meanings, not start waving the hyperbole around about "torture" and "as bad as Saddam".

In short, we need to clean up our messes while retaining a grip on reality.

So we should hold ourselves up for comparison to some of the most repressive societies on earth?

Why not? Especially if we are being criticized by countries whose human rights records are on the south side of abysmal.

Our proven capacity for correcting these things and for effective self-examination gives us the absolute right to say: "Who the f*** are you to criticize me, gangster?"

We are too politic to take this line. But we should.
