More important than the falling out with the Soviets was the war on Iran.

He made up with the Soviets a couple years later. We did provide him some aid in the early '80's but didn't fill the USSR's shoes obviously.

We supported all kinds of disreputable people during the Cold War and other conflicts, including the Baath party for a time (long before Saddam was in power though). We tilted to Iraq briefly when Iran looked more dangerous to our interests. If people want to criticize the US for those things OK. But I think some of that is unavoidable given the nature of the world we are in.

I don't mind the US being criticized for things it actually did do, but I don't like when the criticism goes overboard and presents the US as essentially the sole source of evil. We didn't create Saddam, didn't put him in power, and didn't maintain him for 40 years as a bulwark...yada yada. And when people say otherwise - well, that's just a lot of Barbara Streisand.
