Distribution of wealth is very uneven in India. But one redeeming factor here is the reduction of literacy and spread of education. One of the very good things in the US is the public education system. Some may complain about the quality of the public education system here in the US. But it does have a minimum level of quality and a common American is guaranteed that basic right to education. In India the availability of that basic education is improving. And with education will come the benefit of having a share of the wealth arising from the off shoring of US jobs to India. Currently, there are islands of wealth in India and they are concentrated in the cities. There is a trickle down effect, none the same.

Another big factor in India is corruption. Poverty breeds corruption and I feel that as the wealth pool in India improves, corruption would abate. So I look at outsourcing from the US with mixed feelings.

About the caste system, that is almost non-existent in the cities. In the villages, where 90% of the population exists, it would be a while before that occurs. Not sure if you are aware that Gandhi was assassinated by a member of his own caste (a high cast) because Gandhi was involved with getting rid of the caste system by attending and blessing inter-caste marriages etc.
