The key thing motivating US policy with respect to Iraq during the Reagan era was Iran.

Actually, I believe there is considerable evidence that the US policy was to create a stalemate between Iraq and Iran, preventing either country from being able to dominate the other.

Our focus was on "Operation Staunch" to prevent the delivery of weapons to Iran.

And I guess you've conveniently forgotten about Iran-Contra?

We were perfectly willing to play both sides against the middle when it suited our interests.

And one would think a machiavellian, such as yourself, would applaud such flexible policies.

The reality is that between 1973 and 1990, the US represented a mere 1% of all arms sales to Iraq. The USSR represented 57%, with China representing 12%.

All of which were delivered during the Iran-Iraq war, when the US was working very closely with the Chinese to equip and train the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan and to overthrow the Hang Sen regime in Cambodia.</i.

Afghanistan is not Iraq, nor is Cambodia.

And if I looked hard enough, I probably could find where the US protested the violation of the arms embargo against both Iraq and Iran.. It would have been in our interest to do so.. Just as it was in our interest to provide intelligence, and in the case of Iran, arms, in order to maintain a balance of power that resulted in stalemate and the deterrence of either country dominating the region.
