Considering that McCain spent five years as a POW in Vietnam, Hastert's remarks were particularly impolitic.

Hastert is a distinguished member of the Chickenhawk Club. He was working as a wrestling coach during the Vietnam war. His excuse to avoid going to war was "bad knees".

(Another distinguished member of the club ran away to the Air National Guard, and then ran away from there as well. Yet another distinguished member of the same club said he had better things to do than fight for the US. And yet another distinguished member weaseled out saying that he couldn't make it because he had a rather large boil on his backside!)
