RtS, no doubt the relationship between VIX and the market is inverse. From '97 to 2003 the base of VIX was around 25. Now and before '97 it was lower - without spikes to 50. stockcharts.com[e,a]walaniay[d19940523,20040523][pf][vc60]&pref=G

I think VIX needs to build a higher base first, before spikes to 50 can happen.
