JDN,

I was against the war before it started. It was the most stupid thing to do (for details, read 'Against all enemies' by Richard Clarke).

But the fact is that Bush started the war, created a gigantic mess in Iraq. I am not saying that a quick redrawal is the solution, in contrary. That is why I support the dutch troops who are over there.

The solution? I don't know. As far as I can see it is a LOSE-LOSE situation. Redrawal is not an option, staying there neither. So this is a very difficult problem with huge stakes on the table.

There are a few options I should like to be considered by the US-government (but I don't have the illusion we gonna here them in the Bush-speech monday. Hollow phrases about commitment, free people etc. is what I expect).

1. Full commitment to the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Why? The US has lost it's credibility, worldwide. Real commitment to solve this conflict is IMO the only (and the fastest) way to restore at least a little of this credibility, especially in the Arab world.

2. Making friends instead of enemies with historic partners like Germany, French, Russia etc.

3. Back to the UN.

4. More troops to Iraq. Foreign troops to do Gen. Abizaid a favor.

5. A new President. I can see no way the rest of the world will back Bush. He lost all of his credibility. It is hopeless.

6. Hope for the best.

Regards,

Paul
