Looks like E.L. Doctorow misread his audience:

E.L. Doctorow, one of the most celebrated writers in America, was nearly booed off the stage at Hofstra University Sunday when he gave a commencement address lambasting President George W. Bush and effectively calling him a liar.

It's far worse than the poll indicates. Just because folks
see themselves as "moderates", doesn't mean they actually
have moderate values. And when you see their real voting
patterns, it certainly shows that they overwhelmingly
prefer Democrats..... but many of them are convinced they
are "moderates".
