Oh and the federal govt in Baghdad gets to make all the laws on gay marriage, fuel economy and abortion, of course.

As opposed to a totalitarian government where the party elite makes all the laws deciding everyone's very right to banter, breed, or even breath??

Maybe you would choose anarchy for Iraq?

Seriously, I think one of the problems would be a certain probability that Turkey might accidentally march a few divisions of their army into Kurdinia to head off possible secession of their own Kurds.

And I think you would have just cause for your fears. However, it could also mean that many Turkish Kurds might opt to head south to the Kurdish canton of Iraq.

The real issue is the status of Kirkuk, which the Kurds claim, and which the Arabs depopulated of Kurds over the decades. The Turks certainly also have an interest in protecting their Turkmen brethren in the region as well..

I may require US troops to be stationed there in order to maintain some measure of order and stability.
