Skype Beyond the Hype

Incidentally I installed Skype a week ago. I tried

Roger Wilco
rogerwilco.gamespy.com

and the venerable

NetMeeting
microsoft.com

for Net phone calls before. Of these three Skype has the best voice quality and is the easiest to install - e.g. no NAT modification of the router needed.

The Hype of Skype.

I have to read this, and research this more, but MSN messenger allows voice chat between myself and any of my pre-selected "friends" that are also using messenger.

Can't really see the difference...

It's not full duplex (i.e., we can't talk over each other) but for free calling to my parents or friends 12,000 miles away, I can live with that...

SkypeOut: by VoIP to POTS

July 23, 2004 — Skype Signs 4 Carrier Agreements for SkypeOut
Today Skype announces its initial termination carriers — COLT, iBasis, Level 3, and Teleglobe — to enable calls to the public telephony network, worldwide. The agreements are in place in preparation for SkypeOut, a soon-to-be-launched pre-pay service that allows people to call any telephone number in the world from anywhere in the world at highly competitive rates using the Skype software.

The rate is 0.017 €/min to "normal" countries. Skype to Skype remains free.
