Actually, Zinni is a very, very effective soldier/diplomat.

I'm surprised Bush didn't make part of his ME team as he is extremely well-connected in an area where personal relations count for a lot.

He might be getting his digs in for the Bushies' failure to make him part of the team. Next to McCain, I would say Zinni is probably the best guy Kerry could name as VP.

General Zinni is like all retired Generals, full of himself. Feels put off because the President didn't ask his opinion. Sits on the 50 yard line and pontificates about which way the ball is going, why the ball is going this way and why he wants the ball to end up in the locker room.

Well said..though not true of all 4 stars.

Zinni has the right combat credentials and would seem to have the right ME credentials given his diplomatic work there. But he mixed the two and then tried to add political ambition. America is not ready for a General as President or VP at least not yet. Not realizing that, Zinni failed to play ball with the key players and was left completely out of the game.

Now he sits on the sidelines like a parent telling the ref to get new glasses, it means nothing.
