I meant per year. Typo. I'm not perfect like Kerry.

Don't worry.. They're only statistics... They don't really mean anything...

Just ask the peaceniks out here...

Little typos occur from time to time.

That was [all but over and ?] 100,000 Iraqi kids were dying every [year].

I like statistics, particularly when I understand how they were calculated and what the context is. I think the stat you refer to was over a ten year period that included before and after the oil for food program. It's an average rather than an every year.

It was estimated that 1/2 of the deaths were preventable. It was also more complicated than just a fix with the oil for food program. The infrastructure of Iraq was crumbling due to the embargo. The oil for food program didn't do anything for the infrastructure which affected drinkable water for example.

One of the more puzzling aspects [for me] were the overall statistics of death rates by country. While children and elderly are more suspectible to changing environment, it seems like overall death rate should be an important consideration. Particularly if one has humanitarian concerns.

Below is the top ten, sorted by descending death rates...[numbers below the country name are:
birth rate, death rate, and difference

1 Angola
46.89 25.01 21.88

2 Mozambique
37.99 23.29 14.70

3 Niger
51.45 23.17 28.28

4 Malawi
38.49 22.44 16.05

5 Zimbabwe
25.00 22.43 2.57

6 Botswana
29.63 22.08 7.55

7 Zambia
41.90 22.08 19.82

8 Rwanda
34.78 20.95 13.83

9 Swaziland
40.64 20.40 20.24

10 Sierra Leone
45.63 19.58 26.05

Iraq doesn't make it to the top 10. Iraq isn't even close to the top 10...Iraq is 155 at 6.4 deaths/1000. 1/3 the death rate of Sierra Leone. BTW, the death rate in the US is 8.7/1000 [105 on the list]

It seems to me that if your point is a humanitarian concern, you've got a long list of countries that should be addressed before you get to Iraq.

Why wouldn't you be waving your arms, jumping up and down, over the humanitarian issue for the top 10? Those that have at least triple the death rate in Iraq.
