I don't think you can tell from the answers to those two questions where the journalists stand on free trade or balanced budgets or welfare or the justice system or health care or foreign relations or education or any of the other issues of governance.

Karen,

A fascinating post. Thanks for typing that. It, obviously, took some time to get it right.

The gist of this post, as I read it, is that the questions were 'social conservative' questions, and your definition of conservative leans much more on 'fiscial conservative' issues, to include libertarians and "eagles".

Okay. Fair enough. But. Haven't we just highlighted another chasm between the newsroom and the country? In most of America, the default value for "conservative" describes the positions of George Bush, not Arnold Schwartzenegger. The fact that, as you point out, social conservatives are "bewilderingly alien" to you and to major news people, just confirms that the news rooms are very distant from the political pulse of most voters, to the point of using basic political words like 'liberal' or 'conservative' to mean quite different sets of positions.

It carries a stigma partly because social conservatives are bewilderingly alien and partly because they are thought to be fascists for wanting to impose their social tabus on the rest of us through law.

This is so damned funny Karen. What a good stereotypical comment. Who are these fascists that want to impose on the rest of us? Bush, Cheney, Wolfy, Perle? That's what I heard last night on some of the after speech shows. I've known some pretty adamant moderates and liberals that want to "impose" on me...have imposed on me.

And moderate, what is moderate?.

Moderates agonize over decisions because they might be too extreme, yet when they do make decisions, they end up being extreme to someone. Better yet, these decisions are ineffectual and worthless.....like bombing tents in the desert. Although the tent owner probably thinks that would be pretty extreme.

LOL
