It just struck me that we can stretch that comment of yours a little bit: I wouldn't say terrible- but the world is, imo, more dangerous since the breakup of the democratic leadership in the former USA in the wake of 911. Though it was manipulative, it was a known quantity- and it was efficient at keeping malcontents focused on "ugly Arabs"- and it dealt rather efficiently with them (more efficiently than we could in Europe, with our constraints regarding humanitarian treatment and military capabilities). One can say exactly the same thing about Israel. So "UN legitimacy" everywhere is not, imo, necessarily good for Europe. But it's very noble of European countries to pursue such high minded ideals, at such great cost, that will bring us large amounts of grief.
