The National Post reports in its Tuesday edition that Inco evacuated
Canadian employees from its mine at South Sulawesi, Indonesia, after
terrorists issued death threats against company officials. The Post's Drew
Hasselback writes that Inco's Indonesian subsidiary, PT International
Nickel Indonesia, allowed expatriates to leave the mine at Soroako, South
Sulawesi, after officials in Ottawa warned that Canadians should leave the
area immediately. "There is a credible terrorist threat to western
interests in South Sulawesi province," said the Department of Foreign
Affairs and International Trade. "Canadians should not travel to this area
until further notice. Canadians already in this area should depart." Inco
said the evacuation is voluntary for expatriate workers. The Post reports
that most employees at the mine are Indonesian and enough staff remains in
place for operations to continue as normal. PT Inco is expected to produce
at least 158 million pounds of nickel this year, just less than one-third
of the firm's total expected nickel output of at least 500 million pounds.
The Indonesian threats sent the spot price of nickel to a four-week high on
the London Metal Exchange Monday.
