Report: Terrorists plan summer attack

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- U.S. officials say they have credible intelligence information that terrorists are planning an attack within the United States this summer, according to a report late Tuesday by the Associated Press.

"There is a clearly a steady drumbeat of information that they are going to attack and hit us hard," said a senior federal counterterrorism official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The official told the news service that the intelligence does not specify a time, place or method of how the attack would occur.

The government source added that of most concern is that terrorists may have and use chemical, biological or radiological materials that could result in a significant amount of casualties and damage.

The Associated Press said the current intelligence, according to the senior official, is the most disturbing the government has received since the Sept. 11 attacks.

Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI director Robert Muller are planning a news conference on Wednesday to outline their efforts by law enforcement and homeland security officials to detect and disrupt any potential plots, according to the news report.
