‘Last warning’ to tribal elders to deliver foreigners

By Sailab Mahsud

WANA: Authorities in South Waziristan on Tuesday gave the "last warning" to tribesmen harbouring illegally-residing foreigners to cooperate with the government in registering or expelling the non-Pakistan from the tribal area or face consequences.

Asmatullah Gandapur, political agent, South Waziristan, called a Jirga in Wana and gave the warning to around 100 elders of the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe and the 36-member committee that had raised a 1,200-member strong Lashkar to hunt down the foreigners and their tribal collaborators.

Gandapur issued the warning after returning from Islamabad where he attended a high-level meeting, which decided to take strict action against the foreigners and their Pakistani supporters. Earlier, Inspector General Frontier Corps Maj-Gen Hamid Khan paid a visit to Wana to inspect his troops and review the situation.

In his hard-hitting speech to the Jirga, Gandapur contended that the Lashkar had failed to deliver. "The Lashkar was an eyewash. There was lot of rhetoric but little substance in what you kept saying for several days after forming the Lashkar. It was an unsatisfactory performance," he stressed. He warned that the Ahmadzai Wazir elders would be responsible for the consequences if they failed to assist the government in registering or expelling foreigners from the area. "It is the last warning. You must act as time is running out," he said.

The Ahmadzai Wazir elders and members of the committee didn’t agree with the observation that they failed to make a serious effort to hunt down the foreigners. They said the Lashkar hasn’t been disbanded as it could be summoned once the 36-member committee receives credible information about the hideouts of the foreigners in the area. The tribal elders decided to meet on Wednesday to chalk out the future course of action in light of the government’s warning.
