In fact the US military from the commander on down would have continued to lie about their knowledge the torture of prisoners in Iraq if the pictures did not come out. And even now they are lying about their knowledge of it, including that they approved the entire mindset and framework of the torture facilities and system. US troops were going out at night on kidnap raids into homes to abduct people and send them to the interrogation prisons. This was not done on the spur of the moment by some trailer trash e-2. It was systematic. The only thing that stopped it is the resistance that made these abduction raids expensive for the US troops carrying them out.
