It does make you wonder if they're preparing us for an eventuality. If it happens, they can say we warned you. What would be the benefits to the government and their wealthy backers to "just letting it happen?" Continued heavy spending on counter-intelligence, military, homeland security and all that good stuff that keeps the gravy train rolling for the government and wealthy elites who control the military/industrial/intelligence complex. Assurance that the PATRIOT Act will remain in effect for the forseeable future, continuing their ability to act like Gestapo agents in their far-flung and often ambigous war on terrorism. As a side benefit, their man Bush might receive a bump in the polls as naive Americans "rally around the flag" and support their President during a time of renewed crisis and uncertainty. I'm not saying that if another terrorist attack happens, it is definitely because the Bush cabal will "just let it happen" for selfish political and financial gains. Perhaps the terrorist will outsmart them and pull something off, but I doubt it. These guys have their fingers on the pulse of the nation, especially after 9/11, they know what's going on. But, the incentive certainly is there to "just let it happen", and it wouldn't be the first time this clique of wealthy elites manipulated public opinion and the political system for their own personal gain. Although almost all of this falls under the rubric of "conspiracy theory", some of it seems to be overwhelmingly obvious and supported by ample evidence: the bizarre events that led us into WW2/Pearl Harbor, the creation of the CIA and all it's extragovernmental activities on the behalf of wealthy elites since its creation (i.e. coups, assassinations, repression, etc.), the JFK assassination which arguably led us into the prolonged (yet highly profitable) Viet Nam conflict, the interference with the Viet Nam peace negotiations by Richard Nixon in 1968 while he was running for President (an action that may have prolonged the war for years and cost 10,000s of American lives, yet was also highly profitable for Nixon's wealthy cronies), interference by the Reagan campaign with the negotiations to free the American embassy hostages held in Iran during the 1980 election cycle (Reagan and his wealthy cohorts benefitted tremendously from this mucking up of the American political process), Iran/Contra (the Reagan Admin and wealth elites decided they had enough of Congress and the Constitution and would follow their own set of laws), the arming of Saddam Huessein in the 1980s and then allowing him to invade Kuwaitt despite obvious signs that he intened to do so (including satelites images of troop buildups along the border - the 1991 Gulf War was engineered as a way for the wealthy elites to ensure an American presence in the all-important oil producing Persian Gulf), 9/11 (I know this is a major conspiracy theory if there ever was one, but there is a certain elite element in American society that has benefitted tremendously from the events surrounding 9/11). What is next on their plate? A terrorist attack before the 2004 Presidential election, just in time to boost the President over the top and to reinvigorate American's willingness to lavish the military/industrial/intelligence complex with money. BTW, the terrorist threat color scheme is being used because it's so easy for people to relate to. The average American isn't all that bright. People understand, green=good, yellow=warning, red=bad.
