It has just enough aptness of a superficial aptness to become popular but not enough to be useful for much more than reinforcing "them and us."

As used by some conservatives, cultural Marxism is simply a way to do as you suggest and to load the "them" with "traitor" kinds of allusions. But the term is used quite frequently in Marxist literature. The usual source for the arguments which fly under the umbrella label is the Italian Marxist, Antonio Gramsci, writing in the 30s. There is a school of thought in Britain that flies under this term as well.
