all the ninies telling us how Iraq was a sovereign country we had no right to mess with.

We showed them, didn't we? Messed it up real good. Of course, now, the future's so bright, you gotta wear shades.

<Please, don't let Nadine get away with such flagrant lies:
Nonetheless, he could have got free of the sanctions by abiding by the terms

President George Bush: "At this juncture, my view is we don't want to lift these sanctions as long as Saddam Hussein is in power."

James Baker, Secretary of State: "We are not interested in seeing a relaxation of sanctions as long as Saddam Hussein is in power."

Bill Clinton: "There is no difference between my policy and the policy of the [Bush] Administration.... I have no intention of normalizing relations with him."

Why So Long for Iraq to Comply?

By Sam Husseini

counterpunch.org;

Received by PM. It does seem that perhaps Saddam wasn't going to be allowed to get out of sanctions and he was aware of that as long ago as his foolish occupation of Kuwait after being deliberately misled by the USA ambassador with her infamous "We don't have a view" on what happens between Kuwait and Iraq. That was a green light to attack and also untrue as it was clear that the USA did in fact have an opinion about the border between Kuwait and Iraq.

Saddam had USA spies disguised as UN weapons inspectors. He had apparently never-ending sanctions against him. Right now, on Hard Talk by BBC, there was a lot of scamming going on with the oil for food programme.

What say you? Are the quotes accurate? I suppose I should hunt them down, but you might have the facts at your fingertips.
