Thousands of high school papers across the country are checked for accuracy far better than the N.Y. Times.

That's the first thing Editors seem to say when asked about bloggers and Internet news hounds like Drudge. "Not edited". Well, they can hardly do worse.

The editors are still doing it like 1900. Edit and story the reporter writes and on to the next. An ongoing record of the event would eliminate a lot of errors, but they see it as an unneeded expense.

I suspect a lot of the sloppiness is due to the our overgenerous libel laws. They know they can get away with anything, so why bother?
