The straw man schtick is such a staple in partisan bashing that I'm sure the practitioners see absolutely nothing wrong with it.

My niece finished her freshman year at college this month. At one point she turned in a paper for a course and the prof said it wasn't a college paper. She protested that she had covered all the material in the topic.

But she hadn't applied her own thinking, the prof pointed out, so it wasn't a college paper.

American political debate puts a very low premium on rigorous standards of debate (like addressing your opponent's actual stance instead of making stuff up) and a huge premium for "scoring points off the OTHERS" with any tactic you can get away with.

Makes for a loud, jumbled BS session - lots of heat and no light.
