U.S. April help-wanted index falls to 38

WASHINGTON (AFX) -- Help-wanted advertising in major U.S. newspapers declined in April, the Conference Board said Thursday. The help-wanted index fell to 38 in April from 39 in March. It was 37 a year ago. Ad lineage has increased in five of the nine U.S. regions over the past three months, as the U.S. economy has created an estimated 708,000 net new jobs. "The data on want-ad volume suggest the pace of hiring will moderate," said Ken Goldstein, chief economist for the boad. "Nevertheless, a return to a jobless expansion is not in the cards."
