It is a call to prayer. Five times a day. It is assumed that everyone or nearly everyone will respond to it. The same as bells in school for recess lunch etc. They used to have a bell or whistle in small towns or company towns in America for event changing times of day. Its not that different except Westerners like to make something mysterious and scary out of it. Its always a crack up the way movies weave it in. I admit it adds color and background. Regarding the bad voice guys. Well, the peops prefer live calls to prayer over recorded but I have seen both...the callers take great pride in their ability. Probably nobody is brave enough to tell them they are not rock stars.
